My full name is Venkateswaran.K. Krishnan. I was born and brought up in Kerala, in South India. I was practicing drawing from my school days, initially concentrating on portrait drawing in pencil and Indian ink. Being a self taught Artist, a sustained interest and practice enabled me to achieve technical competence and a degree of skill in working in various mediums, including Oil, Acrylic, Scratchboard and also Sculpting
In The year 1953 I got an opportunity to visit one of the top advertising agencies and their Art Director showed me samples of the Ad campaigns, and one of them had drawings done on Scratchboard . My very first attempt was very much acclaimed and was selected in a juried exhibition of Commercial Artist's Guild, in 1953
Due to non availability of Scratchboard with the stoppage of import, I had to switch to other mediums like Acrylic and Oils. In 1988 onwards I resumed working on Scratch boards, when I started making the boards at home. In Scratchboard art one can achieve a high degree of details and textural effects especially in subjects like Animals, Cave temple architecture and even Portraits. For Colored works I use diluted Acrylic colors
What is Scratchboard
Scratchboard work is similar to engraving. As its name implies, the drawing is done by scratching lines with a tool tipped with a sharp pointed cutter or needle, on a surface prepared with a fine paste of white clay over which a layer of black ink is coated. While scratching, the white surface underneath is exposed creating a fine sharp white line. In the case of color work, instead of black ink, a layer of paint of appropriate color is applied before scratching The images presented here may not be reproduced in any form or used in any manner without the written consent from me .
